Founderess, Daughters of the Sacred Heart

1851 - 1923

Her Life and Legacy

Mother Teresa Nuzzo was born in the year 1851 on 11th May in the little island of Malta. It was through her aunt Rosina that the ideal of life dedicated to children started to appeal to Maria Teresa. She was specialized in music, embroidery and languages. At the age of 15 she was called upon to take over the charge of her Aunt's school, as Rosina Nuzzo turned completely blind and helpless.

Maria Teresa advanced in years, but she still yearned to consecrate her life to God. In her search for God, she was looked on as a generous Mother, and disciplinarian. The pupils in her school received, not only academic instruction but also all the help they needed to lead a good life. Mother Teresa worked ceaselessly; her ceaseless work brought tremendous change in the field of education for the young.

Many people treasure the gift of life and they seem to thirst also for a fulfillment more profound than the limited satisfactions that work, relationship or material possessions provide. One hundred years ago, Maria Teresa Nuzzo identified this human hunger as mystical yearning - a thirst for God and thirst for education. She expressed this truth with particular boldness by educating the poor and needy. She dedicated her life to the education and formation of children and adolescents from all walks of life. The most important thing in her life was charity based on the love of God.

On 10th April 1923, Maria Teresa suffered a stroke as a result of cerebral hemorrhage and died on 17th April 1923.
